ISA Drone Meet Up Review– Very interesting topic and great speaker!
On September 14th over 25 ISA members and guests came and listened to Marshall Staples talk about the UAV Applications: Using the Right Tool for the Right Job. The event was held at the University of Calgary Downtown Campus over noon hour.
Marshall talked about how the field of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) or ‘Drones’ has exploded over the last ten years. The drone industry in North America is now a multi-billion dollar industry and continues to grow rapidly. He said not many people actually know the application of drones in a commercial or industrial setting. Marshall’s talk addressed the current applications of drones, current research, potential applications and the limitations of the technology.
Marshall Staples completed his M.Sc. and B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Calgary. He developed control systems for drone systems with robotic arms for his master’s thesis. His Ph.D. research is a project called the ‘sniffer drone’ which when complete be able to find fugitive gas emissions in the oil and gas industry.
A special thanks to Brian Van Vliet and Marc Russell for coordinating this event.
